Chew Toys

Scruffy chew toy

Prevent ankle nipping and kitchen table destruction by giving your dog appropriate toys to chew.

Every dog is different, but Kongs filled with dog food and topped with cheese or peanut butter are often favorites. Kongs are among the few toys you can safely leave alone with your dog. Until you know your dog better, use caution when choosing the toys you give him while unsupervised. Some dogs quickly chew up squeaky or plush toys but are great for tug or fetch games. Small pieces can be swallowed and cause obstructions. Tennis balls, rope toys and socks are also inappropriate as chew toys. Here is a list of some durable chew toys. Always supervise the first few times of use and often check to be sure there are no sharp edges or missing pieces:

  • Flossies
  • Bully Sticks
  • Moo Chews
  • Tendons
  • Frozen Bones
  • Antlers (preferred by dogs who do not need to destroy things)
  • Nylabone with the nubbies and put some wet food in it
  • Kongs (get a couple in various shapes and vary the filling)
  • Kong Wubba
  • Planet Dog Rubber Ball
  • Ruffians Rubber Toy (might easily be destroyed by strong chewers)
  • Boiled Wool or Chilly Bone

All available at Wigglyville As you can see in this picture, Scruffy just enjoyed a game of fetch but his tennis ball is intact. His parents don’t allow him to chew up his tennis ball but he sure loves to chase it.
